Herbert T. Sussman

Managing Partner

Herbert T. Sussman was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1957. He attended local high schools and received his Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, from Jacksonville University in 1977. He received his Juris Doctor from Florida State University, with honors, in 1980.
Mr. Sussman was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1980 and is “AV” rated by Martindale-Hubbell, which is the highest peer-reviewed rating available.
In more than thirty years of practice, Mr. Sussman has handled and continues to handle personal injury and wrongful death claims; probate and estate planning and probate litigation; drafting of Wills & Trusts; Will contests; defense and prosecution of claims for construction defects, medical malpractice and nursing home cases; products liability claims of many kinds; boundary and real estate transactions and disputes; tax deed litigation and eminent domain. In addition to general trial practice, he has handled in excess of 24 appeals in the First District Court of Appeal alone. Among those cases, Mr. Sussman has represented clients in landmark cases establishing employee rights as well as the right of an adult to sue her father for a determination of paternity. Mr. Sussman has tried numerous jury trials of many kinds and countless bench trials. Among the most recent was an eminent domain case in which the jury awarded $7.4 million dollars, representing roughly three million dollars more than the position advocated by the condemning authority (government).

Hans G. Tanzler, Jr.

Hans G. Tanzler was born in Charlotte, N.C. in 1927 and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1945. He attended the University of Florida, where he was a stand-out player for the Florida Gators men’s basketball team. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1949, and then his law degree in 1951. He was later inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great.”


Mr. Tanzler served as a Judge of the Criminal Court of Record from 1963 to 1967 and was elected Mayor of the City of Jacksonville in 1967, serving until 1979. During his first term as mayor, the city voted to consolidate the city government with that of the county, making him the old government’s last chief executive, as well as the first mayor of the consolidated City of Jacksonville.


The revitalization of Jacksonville’s downtown was one of a number of projects initiated by Mayor Tanzler, as well as clean up of the St. Johns River. The city became “The Bold New City of the South” under his leadership.


Mr. Tanzler was President of the National League of Cities in 1968 and in 1972 established the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women.


Tyrie A. Boyer

Tyrie A. Boyer was born in 1924 on a small farm near Williston, Florida, After his family moved to Jacksonville, he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1942, and immediately thereafter joined the U.S. Navy; he served as a flight engineer on transport planes in the South Pacific. He received a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Florida in 1953, an LLB degree, magna cum laude, in 1954, and a Juris Doctor degree, with high honors, in 1967.

Mr. Boyer was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1954 and was “AV” rated (the highest peer-reviewed rating) by Martindale-Hubbell continuously since 1972.

Mr. Boyer was elected Judge of the Civil Court of Record of Duval County in 1960. He was elevated to Circuit Judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit by gubernatorial appointment in 1963 and was twice thereafter re-elected as Circuit Judge without opposition. He served as Associate Judge of the District Court of Appeal, Third District, while a Circuit Judge. Mr. Boyer was Judge, District Court of Appeal First District of Florida, from 1973 to 1979 where he served as Chief Judge for two years. He also served, by special assignment, on the Supreme Court of Florida.
